Antônio Carlos Gomes
Brazilian composer
Antônio Carlos Gomes (Brazilian Portuguese: [ɐ̃ˈtoni.u ˈkaʁluz ˈɡomis]; July 11, 1836 – September 16, 1896) was a Brazilian composer, chiefly remembered for his operas. A central figure in Brazilian Romantic music, he was the first composer from the Americas to achieve major success in the European operatic world. His best-known opera, Il Guarany, also known in Portuguese as O Guarani, brought a Brazilian literary subject to the international operatic circuit. Its 1870 premiere at La Scala made Gomes the first non-European composer to premiere a work at the opera house.
Most of Gomes's mature operas were written to Italian texts and for Italian theatrical institutions, but several of his most important subjects came from Brazilian literature, history, and political life. Il Guarany was based on José de Alencar's novel O Guarani and the imagery of Brazilian Indianism, while Lo schiavo, dedicated to Princess Isabel in celebration of abolition, premiered in Rio de Janeiro in 1889. His other major operas include Fosca, Salvator Rosa, Maria Tudor, and Condor. Beyond the stage, he wrote sacred music, songs, hymns, piano works, chamber music, orchestral music, and the vocal-symphonic poem Colombo.
During his lifetime, Gomes was celebrated in Brazil and Italy, received decorations from the Empire of Brazil, the Kingdom of Italy, and Portugal, and was praised by musicians including Giuseppe Verdi and Franz Liszt. He has been remembered in different ways: as a national composer, a symbol of imperial Romanticism, and a problematic figure for Brazilian modernists. More recent scholarship, recordings, critical editions, and revivals have brought renewed attention to his work, including studies of the whitening of his public image and discussions of Gomes as a light-skinned Black or pardo man, with due caution about the differences between 19th-century and modern racial categories. Often regarded as the most important Brazilian composer of the 19th century, Gomes occupies a central place in the history of Brazilian concert music and in debates that preceded the nationalism and modernism associated with later composers such as Heitor Villa-Lobos. He is the patron of Chair 15 of the Brazilian Academy of Music, was declared the Patron of Music in Brazil by federal law in 1979, and had his name inscribed in the Book of Steel of the Tancredo Neves Pantheon of the Fatherland and Freedom in 2017.
